THE FOOLPROOF WAY TO BREWING GOOD OOLONG

Step 1: Get some BANGtea leaves

Step 2: Add hot water

Step 3: Let it steep and drink up!

But if you want some more instruction, here are 5 ways we brew tea on the regular.


(1) Grandpa style

Preparation: none 🤘

The O.G. of brewing methods. A glass + leaves + hot water = go! There’s no measuring here. It’s whatever eyeballed amount of leaves happened to fall out of your bag & water that’s hot, most likely boiling. When you’ve drunk it down to half full, fill it back up with more water for a 2nd steep. The most hardcore use a tall glass cup where you can really admire the leaves & color of the broth while burning your hands trying to hold it. We like to use 200ml pyrex beakers. Most folks go with a mug so you can actually pick it up – so practical.

 

 

(2) Gongfucha

Preparation: 5g of tea for 150g device, water heated to ~208℉

Uses small teapots or gaiwans made of clay, porcelain or glass. These brewing devices generally hold between 110ml - 200ml of water per brew (in American, that means ~4-7oz of water) and serves tea in small 1oz cups. We like to brew on the stronger side and will use ~5g of tea per 150ml device. The first steep will be hot and quick, used for rinsing the tea leaves of any debris that may be on them & help the leaves start opening up. Subsequent steeps will range in duration from 30-60 seconds. A deliciously produced oolong can be steeped upwards of 10 times! Note: Our brewing recommendations are set for gongfucha.


(3) Western style

Preparation: ~8-10g of tea for a large teapot, boiling water

Uses larger teapots, generally 16oz + in size. Grab a teapot or a french press, add hot water and let it steep for 5 minutes before you start drinking! We tend to use ~8-10g of tea for a 20oz teapot, and add fresh hot water for a second steep. Most folks will use teacups & saucers while throwing some milk & sugar into the tea. While we tend to drink our teas pure, there’s no shame in brewing it Western & zhuzhing it up a bit.

 

 

(4) Cold brew

Preparation: 8g of tea for 16oz water

Just like coffee, if you cold brew tea you’ll have a slower extraction but the resulting tea will be super smooth. We recommend 8-10g of tea leaves for a 16oz water bottle. Throw the leaves in cold water, pop in the fridge, and let it steep for ~10-12 hours.


(5) Oolong gin

Preparation: 5g of tea for 12oz gin

Why drink tea in water when you can drink tea in gin? We recommend 5g of tea leaves per 12oz of gin. You’ll be surprised with how quickly the extraction process occurs– you’ll only need 12-24 hours for a pretty potent tea flavor. We’ve made oolong gin with every tea in the line-up and have enjoyed them all!

 

In summary, it’s impossible to brew BANGtea poorly.

Too strong? Just add some more water to dilute it.

Too weak? Just add more tea leaves.

Think the water is too hot? Don’t worry! High mountain oolong plants grow more slowly and produce thicker tea leaves that are suitable for using boiling water for extraction.
